Abate et al reported risk factors for mortality in a malnourished child in Ethiopia. These can help to identify a child who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the Ethiopian Armed Forces Hospital, Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.
Patient selection: age 6 to 59 months with severe acute malnutrition
Age range at greatest risk of death: between 36 and 59 months
Conditions associated with death:
(1) acute gastroenteritis
(2) pneumonia
(3) anemia
(4) disseminated tuberculosis
(5) vitamin A deficiency
(6) septic shock with multi-organ failure
(7) edematous malnutrition
Risk factors for mortality associated with acute gastroenteritis:
(1) dehydration
(2) failure to replace fluids with ReSoMal (oral replacement solution for children with severe malnutrition)
