Description

Wound botulism occurs when there is contamination of a wound with Clostridium botulinum spores which subsequently germinate and release toxin into the circulation.


 

People at risk:

(1) outdoorsman (hunter, farmer, other)

(2) soldier

(3) construction worker

(4) injection drug user who practices subcutaneous injections ("skin popping")

(5) chronic cocaine sniffing

(6) woman post-cesarean section

 

Type of injury:

(1) compound fracture

(2) crush injuries

(3) deep decubital ulcers

(4) nasal or sinus infections (in cocaine sniffers)

(5) subcutaneous abscess
