A number of risk factors may be associated with vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Risk factors for vulvovaginal candidiasis in the general population include:
(1) frequent sexual intercourse, especially if there is mucosal abrasion
(2) receptive oral sex (cunninglingus)
(3) oral contraceptive or spermicide use
(4) previous diagnosis of vulvovaginal candidiasis
(5) non-White race (Black or “other”)
The possibility of immunodeficiency needs to be considered. Conditions may include:
(1) chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis
(2) AIDS
(3) systemic corticosteroid therapy
(4) immunosuppression
