Description

Lake et al studied risk factors for surgical site infection after hysterectomy. The authors also identified risk factors associated with urinary tract infection (UTI). The authors are from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

Patient selection: woman status post hysterectomy

Risk factors for urinary tract infection found in study (Table 6):

(1) history of cerebrovascular accident (CVA, stroke) with neurologic deficit

(2) current corticosteroid use

(3) operative time greater than the 75th percentile for procedure (prolonged)

Additional factors that may contribute to risk (not given in paper):

(1) failure to remove urinary catheter following surgery (data on urinary catheters incomplete in data set)

(2) urinary tract infection prior to surgery

Diabetes and morbid obesity were included in the dataset.
