Description

Solid fuel engines for model rockets burn intensely and can be source of severe thermal burns.

NOTE: Model rockets come in a range of sizes. Solid fuel rocket engines tend to be used in small rockets.

The duration of engine ignition is a few seconds.

The risk of explosion is minimal.

In general, the risk of thermal burn is low if the model rocket engine is handled appropriately.

Risk factors for thermal burns:

(1) ignition while handling the rocket

(2) being too close to the rocket at engine ignition

(3) pediatric patient

(4) intoxication

(5) not handling the engine according to manufacturer's instruction

(6) secondary ignition (caught in a fire, etc)
