The Radiation Fibrosis Syndrome (RFS) can be a serious, delayed complication of radiation therapy. Several risk factors can help to identify a patient who may develop this complication.
Patient selection: history of radiation therapy
Risk factors for radiation fibrosis syndrome:
(1) high total ionizing radiation dose
(2) higher dose per fraction
(3) irradiation of a large volume of normal tissue
(4) prolonged radiation therapy
(5) repeated therapy to the same tissue
(6) concurrent chemotherapy
(7) Marfan syndrome
(8) genetic factors making the person more susceptible
