Description

A volleyball player may develop signs of digital ischemia following a match.


Mechanism: repetitive trauma, especially if there is hyperextension

 

Athlete selection: elite volleyball player

 

Clinical findings include cold, pale and/or blue digits of the dominant hand.

 

Risk factors for digital ischemia:

(1) long-term career (playing > 17 years, playing > 14 years)

(2) frequent weight training of the dominant upper extremity to increase strength

(3) female gender

 

The diagnosis of volleyball association requires exclusion of other causes.
