Description

Plastic pipe carrying flammable gas may develop sufficient static electricity to ignite the gas, making it a burning issue.

Risk factors for static electricity developing on a plastic pipe:

(1) installing and handling the plastic pipe

(2) repairing or working on the plastic pipe

(3) particulates in the flowing gas

(4) particulates outside the pipe passing over it (in the air, during excavation)

(5) hole in the wall allowing gas to escape

(6) connectors or flow valves that create turbulence in flowing gas

Development of static electricity is enhanced when there is:

(1) low humidity

(2) lack of adequate grounding

Grounding may be achieved by:

(1) wrapping the pipe in moistened cloth

(2) having a copper grounding wire running along the pipe
