Description

Mesotherapy involves injection of vitamins, plant extracts or other substances into the subcutaneous tissue for cosmetic, therapeutic or irrational reasons. Serious problems can occur if done improperly.


 

Possible types of adverse reactions following the injections:

(1) cellulitis and/or abscess

(2) allergic reaction

(3) chemical/toxic irritation

 

Risk factors for problems in recipients of mesotherapy:

(1) use of non-approved materials

(2) administration by someone other than a licensed practitioner

(3) failure to clean the skin properly

(4) failure to use sterile equipment (needles, syringes, etc) and technique during administration, including re-use of nonsterile equipment

(5) use of material from multi-dose containers between multiple patients

(6) pooling material from several vials

(7) failure to change gloves and handwash between patients

 

Risk factors for the person administering mesotherapy:

(1) failure to wear gloves and appropriate personal protective equipment

(2) failure in sharps disposal
