Description

Shiraishi et al evaluated patients with a stoma for risk factors associated with a peristomal skin disorder. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from National Cancer Center Hospital East in Kashiwa, Japan.


Patient selection: stoma (loop ileostomy or colostomy)

 

Risk factors for severe peristomal skin disorders:

(1) parastomal hernia

(2) adjuvant chemotherapy

 

Other factors:

(1) larger base area of the stoma in square centimeters

 

Types of peristomal skin disorders include:

(1) erythema and/or erosion

(2) blister or bulla formation

(3) pigmentation

(4) ulceration

(5) pustule

(6) tissue overgrowth
