Description

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can cause severe pneumonia requiring hospitalization in the elderly. Walsh et al identified risk factors which can help identify those patients who may require more aggressive monitoring and therapy. The authors are from the University of Rochester in New York.


 

Patient selection: age >= 65 years

 

Primary risk factors:

(1) underlying chronic pulmonary disease (COPD, other)

(2) functional disability

(3) low serum neutralizing antibody titer

 

where:

• Functional disability was measured using the Instruments of Activities of Daily Living (IADL), which ranges from 0 to 12.

 

Additional risk factors:

(4) male gender

(5) congestive heart failure
