A patient with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) may have severe complications if certain conditions are present.
Patient selection: heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
Risk factors for a poor outcome:
(1) female sex (increased risk of stroke)
(2) malignancy
(3) severe thrombocytopenia
(4) delay in discontinuation of heparin
(5) failure to adequately anticoagulate after heparin discontinued
(6) renal impairment
(7) peripheral vascular surgery
