Description

Sethna et al reported risk factors for catheter-associated peritonitis in a pediatric patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from an intervention to reduce the risk. The authors are from multiple children's hospitals in the United States.

Patient selection: pediatric patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis

Risk factors for catheter-associated peritonitis:

(1) suboptimal compliance with the catheter follow-up bundle

(2) touch contamination of the circuit

(3) upward orientation of the catheter at the catheter exit site (versus lateral or downward)

(4) use of plastic rather than titanium adapter at the distal end of the dialysis catheter

The risk of infection increases with the number of risk factors.
