Description

Salt water corrosion (aqueous or marine corrosion) is a constant problem for people living on or near the ocean, especially if they own a boat.

Many metals may degrade in salt water due to galvanic corrosion. This can be prevented by:

(1) physically isolating the metal from the salt water

(2) painting or coating the metal

(3) changing the potential of the metal (coupling to a “sacrificial” anode, applying a voltage)

(4) covering the metal with a corrosion inhibitor

Any metal subject to corrosion will be damaged if left unprotected.

Additional risk factors:

(1) prolonged exposure

(2) high temperatures (engines, etc)

(3) exposure to acid or other chemicals

(4) scratches or other damage to the surface

(5) organisms that may attach to the surface or damage the metal

(6) poor inspection and maintenance
