Description

The distal biceps brachii tendon may rupture under the right conditions.

Risk factors for rupture of the distal biceps brachii tendon:

(1) single traumatic event with the flexed elbow being subjected to a sudden extension load

(2) multiple microtraumas over a period of weeks, months or years associated with strenuous physical labor

(3) inappropriate muscle loading, often the result of poor training or inappropriate muscle use

(4) middle age (often with reduced vascular perfusion, healing and other degenerative changes)

(5) penetrating trauma

(6) medications associated with weakening of connective tissue or tendon rupture (corticosteroids, fluorquinolones, other)
