Trauma to the eye can occur in people playing basketball. Sometimes this trauma can lead to a retinal break, which in turn may be followed by retinal detachment.
The usual presentation is a sudden loss of visual acuity after an ocular trauma during a basketball game.
Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is the most common type.
Risk factors for retinal detachment:
(1) moderate-to-high myopia
(2) failure to wear protective eyewear
On multivariate analysis the initial visual acuity was the independent factor affecting the final outcome, with patients with good visual acuity having good final outcomes.
Also important was early detection and intervention.
