Description

A number of risk factors may predispose a patient to a retinal detachment.


 

Risk factors for retinal detachment:

(1) myopia

(2) ocular trauma

(3) family or personal history of retinal detachment

(4) advanced age

(5) history of cataract surgery or aphakia

(6) mountain biking (or other sports with a lot of head shaking)

(7) degenerative retinal disease

(8) connective tissue disorders (Marfan's syndrome, other)

(9) retinopathy (diabetic, prematurity, sickle cell disease, other)

(10) maculopathy

(11) retinal vascular disease (retinal vein occlusion, microaneurysm, etc)

(12) hypertension

(13) uveitis, scleritis or other inflammatory ocular disease
