Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is typically associated with respiratory infections in young children. However, it can also infect adults, with older adults at increased risk for serious disease.
Patient selection: RSV positive, age >= 60 years
Severe outcomes (ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, etc) occurred in about 19% of hospitalized patients.
Most patients have one or more comorbidities:
(1) obesity
(2) diabetes
(3) COPD
(4) CHF and/or coronary artery disease
(5) immunocompromising condition
(6) other chronic lung disease
(7) kidney disorder
(8) neurologic conditions
(9) codetection of influenza or SARS-CoV-2
Risk factors for significant infection include:
(1) age >= 75 years
(2) residence in a long-term care facility
(3) COPD, other chronic lung disease, or CHF
