Description

Televancin is an antibiotic derived from vancomycin with activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Certain risk factors may increase the risk of renal failure. In most patients the renal injury is reversible after discontinuation of tevavancin therapy.

Outcome: acute renal dysfunction

Risk factors for renal failure:

(1) pre-existing renal dysfunction

(2) hypertension

(3) diabetes

(4) other potentially nephrotoxic drugs (aminoglycosides, other)

(5) prior supratherapeutic doses of vancomycin (trough serum level > 20 mg/L)

(6) high body mass index (BMI)

(7) use of intravenous contrast dye before telavancin therapy

The risk increases with the number of risk factors present.
