A patient who has had an atrial myxoma resected needs to be monitored for possible recurrence, usually by ultrasonography.
Patient selection: status post resection of an atrial myxoma
Risk factors for recurrent atrial myxoma:
(1) incomplete resection (present at same location)
(2) failure to detect a myxoma present at the time of surgery (present at a different location)
(3) appearance of a new myxoma after surgery (present at a different location)
A patient with multiple atrial myxomas should be evaluated for familial atrial myxoma and Carney's complex.
