A patient who has had a pilonidal sinus may develop recurrent disease. The risk is affected by a number of factors.

hair in region
infection in adjacent hair follicles
• Wound healing may be poor with chronic corticosteroid therapy, poorly controlled diabetes, edema, malnutrition and other factors (see section 29.28).
