Description

A person who uses methamphetamine is at risk for psychotic episodes. According to McKetin et al the prevalence of psychosis in methamphetamine users is 11-fold greater than in the general population.


Risk factors for psychosis in a patient using methamphetamine:

(1) heavy and regular use, with further risk in someone who is dependent

(2) use of crystal methamphetamine or other high-potency formulations

(3) heavy and regular use of alcohol

(4) heavy and regular use of cannabis

(5) previous history of psychosis

 

Additional factors:

(6) lack of education beyond high school
