There are a number of risk factors for prostatitis.
Key risk factors:
(1) urinary tract instrumentation or trauma
(2) urethral stricture
(3) urethritis (often secondary to a sexually-transmitted disease)
(4) other urinary tract infection
Other factors:
(1) prostatic stone formation
(2) other causes of poor drainage of prostatic secretions (stasis)
(3) immunosuppression/immunodeficiency
