Description

Graduated compression stockings (GCS) may be applied to patients in order to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The use of these stockings may be associated with the development of pressure ulcers.


Patient selection: graduated compression stockings

 

The location of the pressure ulcers may be unexpected, such as the toes.

 

Risk factors for pressure ulcer development:

(1) obesity

(2) diabetes

(3) spinal cord injury or other sensory impairment to the legs

(4) prolonged application of the GCS

(5) need for mechanical ventilation
