A number of factors may contribute to postpartum sexual dysfunction (PPFSD) for a woman. It may be missed if not specifically asked about.

Risk factors for PPFSD:

(1) episiotomy (often short-term)

(2) severe obstetrical trauma

(3) breastfeeding

(4) use of a progestin-only contraception (relative low estrogen levels may be associated with vaginal dryness)

(5) other causes of vaginal dryness

(6) vaginismus

(7) other causes of dyspareunia

(8) lack of postpartum sexual health counselling and treatment

(9) antepartum sexual dysfunction
