Description

Postoperative delirium (PODE) is relatively common after vascular surgery.


Patient selection: vascular surgery

 

Risk factors for postoperative delirium:

(1) older age

(2) ASA >= 3

(3) renal failure

(4) history of previous stroke or neurologic comorbidity

(5) history of cardiac disease

(6) increased blood loss

(7) diabetes mellitus

(8) hypertension

(9) smoking

(10) open aortic surgery

(11) ICU admission

 

where:

Some of these are also risk factors for atherosclerosis.

 

Male sex was a weak predictor.

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) drug-induced delirium

(2) perioperative stroke
