Description

Several risk factors may help to identify a patient who is at risk for a poor outcome. These patients may benefit from more aggressive management.

Patient selection: organophosphate poisoning

Risk factors for poor outcome following organophosphate poisoning:

(1) delay in discovery and transport (= delay in starting therapy)

(2) mechanical ventilation, especially when there were problems in management (delay in endotracheal intubation, etc)

(3) severe comorbid conditions

(4) complications (aspiration pneumonia, sepsis)

The severity of the exposure would also be a risk indicator.
