Description

The external metal pins used to fix a fracture may be involved in myiasis.


 

Risk factors for a fracture pin to be involved:

(1) diabetes mellitus

(2) infection of the pin with purulence and/or discharge

(3) immobilization (including coma or depressed level of consciousness)

(4) poor hygiene

(5) immunodeficiency or immunosuppression (poor immune status)

(6) malnutrition

(7) lack of adequate care

(8) unable to see the pin site, including poor visual acuity

 

The pins may need to be removed to control the infestation or accompanying infection.
