Description

Onychomycosis tends to be more common in patients with one or more risk factors.


 

Risk factors for onychomycosis:

(1) advancing age

(2) diabetes mellitus

(3) immunosuppression, including HIV, organ transplantation, corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drug therapy

(4) peripheral vascular disease

(5) family history of onychomycosis

(6) frequent participation in vigorous physical activity

(7) tight and occlusive shoes

(8) moist communal environments (swimming pool, athletic shower, etc)

(9) duration of hemodialysis in patients with renal failure

(10) artificial nails

• Some of these risk factors involve keeping the feet moist and subject to trauma.
