An infant may be at increased risk for nutritional rickets if certain risk factors are present.
Risk factors for nutritional rickets in an infant:
(1) insufficient maternal calcium or vitamin D intake during the pregnancy
(2) exclusive breast-feeding
(3) insufficient calcium and vitamin D intake (lack of supplements)
(4) very low sunlight exposure (as in polar latitudes) or dark colored skin
(5) gastrointestinal disease preventing absorption of calcium, phosphate and/or vitamin D
(6) prematurity
