Risk factors for release of enteric parasites into the healthcare environment:
(1) diarrhea in source patient with release of infective forms
(2) poor handling of fecal waste
(3) poor cleaning of the patient's room
(4) lapses in handwashing
(5) lapses in cleaning endoscopes
Risk factors for becoming infected:
(1) immunuosuppression
(2) reduction in gastric acid (due to age, illness or medication)
(3) enteral feedings
(4) contaminated water or food supplies
