There are many reasons why a patient may not use eye drops prescribed for the treatment of glaucoma. Understanding the reasons can help to plan interventions to improve compliance.


 

Risk factors for poor compliance in the use of eye drops for the treatment of glaucoma:

(1) cost

(2) multiple eye drop prescriptions

(3) local adverse side effects (irritation, etc)

(4) systemic adverse side effects

(5) inability to get drops into the eye

(6) failure of the clinician to initially emphasize the importance of the eye drops

(7) failure of the clinician to monitor adherence over time

(8) social isolation (lack of someone to assist, remind and support)

(9) running out of medicine

(10) confusion and forgetfulness

(11) complex regimen

(12) poor health with multiple other medications for comorbid conditions

(13) change in routine (travel, illness, etc)

(14) low education or poor understanding

(15) does not like or trust the doctor
