While parathyroidectomy may reduce the risk of kidney stones in a patient with primary hyperparathyroidism, it does not eliminate the risk entirely. Certain factors may be associated with an increased risk for stone disease.
Patient selection: history of parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism
Risk factors for nephrolithiasis following parathyroidectomy:
(1) history of renal stones before parathyroidectomy
(2) persistent hypercalciuria
(3) failure to remove all hyperplastic parathyroid glands
(4) first 10 years after surgery
(5) younger age (< 55 years of age)
(6) presence of ureteral strictures
