Description

A patient with leprosy is at risk for myiasis. A patient with risk factors may require closer monitoring and interventions to reduce risk.

Risk factors for nasal myiasis:

(1) intranasal ulceration or open wound

(2) lack of sensation

(3) secondary bacterial infection

(4) atrophic rhinitis

Risk factors for wound myiasis:

(1) open wound

(2) lack of sensation

(3) secondary bacterial infection

(4) decreased visual acuity

(5) social isolation

Some risk factors are opportunities for the female fly to lay eggs. Other factors may result in the patient being unaware of the infection.
