Description

Greenberg identified risk factors for development of myiasis in patients seen at hospitals in Chicago.

Risk factors identified by Greenberg:

(1) a helpless and/or debilitated person

(2) blood and/or odors of decomposition present

(3) nursing neglect

(4) summer

Interpretation:

• The presence of two or more factors identifies a person who should be receive special attention to prevent an infestation.

Limitation:

• Some people infer that myiasis only occurs when poor nursing care has been given. Myiasis can occur even with perfect nursing care when the other risk factors are present. It should prompt a review of the patient's care to make sure that no omissions occurred, but myiasis does not define substandard care by itself.
