There are a number of factors that increase the risk of a person developing mumps.
Mumps is:
(1) endemic in many regions of the world
(2) highly contagious
(3) transmissible by respiratory droplets, saliva, and fomites
(4) transmissible by patients with asymptomatic infection
Risk factors for mumps:
(1) unvaccinated status OR waning immunity after vaccination
(2) immunodeficiency, including HIV
(3) international travel
(4) epidemic outbreak
(5) close contact situation with an infected person (family, dormitory, crowd, etc)
(6) lack of respiratory PPE in appropriate setting
(7) failure to place an infected person in respiratory isolation
