Description

Jumper's knee (patellar tendinopathy or tendinosis) is more likely to occur if certain risk factors are present.

While it tends to occur most often in athletes participating in jumping sports (basketball, volleyball, dance, gymnastics, soccer, etc), it may be encountered in other sports as well. especially in nonelite athletes. Some of the features suggest a "weekend warrior".

Risk factors for patellar tendinopathy include:

(1) obesity (high body mass index, high waist-to-hip ratio)

(2) limb-length discrepancy

(3) flat foot arch

(4) weak quadriceps muscles

(5) poor flexibility (tightness) of hamstring and/or quadriceps muscles

(6) low vertical jump performance

(7) high total exposure in hours

Evidence for some of the risk factors is limited.
