Description

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a Flavivirus transmitted by mosquitoes of various Culex species.


 

Geographic distribution: South, East and Southeast Asia

 

Risk factors for infection with JEV:

(1) travel to rural areas, especially in regions where rice is cultivated

(2) travel during the rainy season

(3) presence of pigs in close proximity to humans

 

Protective factors:

(1) taking anti-mosquito measures

(2) vaccination with the JEV vaccine

(3) previous exposure to virus (natural immunity)
