Emergency medical services workers (emergency medical responders) are at risk for injury if the ambulance is involved in an accident. The risk of an accident and/or injury increases if certain factors are present.
Ambulance-related:
(1) poor mechanical condition
(2) driving at high speeds
Conditions-related:
(1) bad weather
(2) poor visibility
(3) heavy traffic
Driver-related:
(1) poor training
(2) poor driving skills with risk taking
(3) impaired by medication, drug or alcohol
Restraint-related:
(1) failure to use restraints
(2) patient and/or cot not restrained
(3) equipment not secured down (can become a missile in an accident)
An attendant may not be restrained if s/he need to attend to an ill patient during the run.
