Description

Cryptococcal infections are uncommon but can occur in a person with one or more risk factors.


 

Risk factors for cryptococcosis:

(1) inhalation of dust from heavily contaminated soil

(2) significant exposure to pigeons or pigeon excrement

(3) AIDS

(4) organ transplantation

(5) immunosuppressive therapy, including high dose corticosteroid therapy

(6) sarcoidosis

(7) Hodgkin's disease or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

(8) hereditary or acquired defects in T-cell immunity

 

Some patients may not have an identifiable risk factor.
