Description

Infections with Burkholderia cepacia are uncommon in healthy, immunocompetent individuals but they may occur if one or more risk factors are present. Isolation of Burkholderia cepacia may indicate a potentially serious infection or may reflect environmental contamination.

Risk factors for pneumonia and bacteremia in vulnerable patients:

(1) chronic granulomatous disease or other neutrophil functional defects

(2) cystic fibrosis

(3) cancer patients (leukemia, malignant lymphoma, solid tumor)

(4) hemodialysis

(5) immunodeficiency

Risk factors for nosocomial infection

(1) intravascular catheter in hospitalized patients

(2) ICU patients with mechanical ventilation

(3) recent therapy with broad spectrum antibiotics

(4) immunosuppression

(5) use of contaminated solutions (irrigation, nebulizer, other)

(6) urethral instrumentation or transrectal prostate biopsy

(7) surgical wounds

Risk factors for soft tissue infection:

(1) major full thickness burn

(2) prolonged foot immersion in environmental water (soldiers, others)
