A penile implant may become infected, especially if certain risk factors are present.
Risk factors for infection of a penile implant:
(1) urinary tract infection
(2) sepsis or transient bacteremia
(3) uncontrolled diabetes
(4) paraplegia
(5) inexperienced surgeon
(6) replacement or repair of the prosthesis, especially if the operation is complicated and/or prolonged
Additional factors that may increase the risk of infection:
(1) immunosuppression
(2) high dose corticosteroid therapy
