Description

A number of factors may determine if a catheter providing a continuous peripheral nerve block (CPNB) becomes infected. Steps targeting these factors allows for safe analgesia for the patient.

Risk factors for infection of a CPNB catheter infection:

(1) being in the intensive care unit (ICU)

(2) duration of use > 48 hours (especially when > 96 hours)

(3) not providing antibiotic prophylaxis

(4) placement of the catheter into the axilla or inguinal/femoral region

(5) frequent dressing changes

(6) failure to employ surgical type aseptic conditions during the insertion

(7) careful preparation and handling of the regional block infusate

(8) possibly male gender
