Description

Human lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) may be acquired after contact with rodents. While usually mild some patients may experience disease with significant morbidity and even mortality.


 

Modes of spread:

(1) direct contact with secretions or excretions from an infected animal

(2) inhalation of an aerosol from secretions or excretions from an infected animal

(3) bite or scratches from an infected animal

 

Persons at risk:

(1) person directly or indirectly in contact with wild rodents

(2) person who has intimate contact with a pet rodent

(3) laboratory workers who handle rodents

(4) pet store owners

(5) veterinarians

 

Risk factors for complications:

(1) fetal exposure during the first or second trimester

(2) organ transplant recipient

(3) other patients with impaired immunity (hereditary or acquired, including drug-induced)
