A patient with amebiasis may have more severe disease if one or more risk factors are present.
Risk factors for increased severity of disease:
(1) children, particularly neonates
(2) pregnancy and the post-partum state
(3) use of corticosteroids
(4) presence of malignancy
(5) malnutrition
(6) immunodeficiency
