While instilling eye drops is relatively straightforward, there are several ways to get it wrong. A patient doing it wrong may not be aware that there is a problem.
Risk factors for improper eye drop administration:
(1) lack of initial training
(2) inexperience
(3) tremor (hand or head)
(4) insufficient finger strength to squeeze bottle
(5) arthritis or ankylosis of fingers, shoulder or cervical vertebrae
(6) impaired vision including visual field defect
(7) cognitive impairment (may forget that eye drops already instilled)
(8) cast or orthopedic hardware on dominant hand
