The risk for nephrosclerosis increases if certain factors are present in a hypertensive patient.
Risk factors for hypertensive nephrosclerosis include:
(1) Black race
(2) chronic hypertension, especially if severe
(3) family history of hypertension-related kidney disease
(4) diabetes mellitus
(5) microalbuminuria
(6) other manifestations of chronic hypertension such as left ventricular hypertrophy
The more risk factors that are present, the greater the risk that the patient will develop nephrosclerosis.
