Prototheca is a genus of achlorophyllic algae that rarely may cause human infections.
Possible defects in host defects that place the patient at risk:
(1) deficiency in cellular immunity (possibly NK cell activity)
(2) defects in neutrophil function (but not neutropenia)
Specific risk factors:
(1) corticosteroid therapy, local or systemic
(2) other immunosuppressive therapy, including organ transplantation
(3) hematologic malignancy
(4) cancer
(5) diabetes mellitus
(6) AIDS
(7) trauma, including surgery
(8) alcoholism
(9) peritoneal dialysis
(10) immunodeficiency
(11) hereditary defect in neutrophil function
