A number of factors may increase the risk of getting a fish hook embedded into the skin.
Risk factors for getting a fish hook embedded in the skin:
(1) use of barbed hooks
(2) use of more than 1 hook at a time
(3) alcohol or drug abuse
(4) not being aware where other people are, especially behind you
(5) reaching blindly into a tackle box
(6) crowding with two or more people close to each other
Using a single unbarbed/barbless hook can make removal much simpler if it does occur.
