Description

A patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus may experience significant fatigue which can have a negative influence on the patient's quality of life (QOL).

Risk factors for fatigue in a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus:

(1) poor sleep quality (including obstructive sleep apnea)

(2) depression

(3) physical deconditioning

(4) hypoglycemia

(5) polypharmacy

(6) cytokines associated with chronic infection or inflammation

The risk of fatigue tends to increase with the number and severity of risk factors present. Interventions to address risk factors such as exercise and weight loss may help to reduce fatigue.
